Scope: The design and construction of a Pressure Sewer Reticulation & Collection System to serve properties on the outskirts of the town.
Environmental Factors: Due to the ground conditions of the Limestone Coast, the onsite septic systems absorption was failing due to the extremely rocky soil conditions and septic run off was not able to be controlled.
PSSA Solution: The current township is predominantly served by a gravity sewer system. There were two areas within the town boundary that were unable to connect to the existing system due to limited gradient and the underlying limestone.
The combined reticulation of 2.5klms was installed using directional boring technologies, open cut excavation and some rock sawing was used to combat the rock.
Most pressure sewer system pump well installations required the use of pneumatic jack hammers to break through the limestone shelf.
There were two motels that were serviced in this project and both these installations required larger storage tanks which included a duty/standby arrangement.
Environmental Outcomes: Post project completion saw an immediate improvement to localised street drains, creek catchments and surface water pooling due to the removal of onsite disposal. It also allowed the commercial motels to push ahead with further bookings and development as they were now connected to a reticulated sewerage system. This project removed 5.9 million litres of septic and greywater discharge from the environment per annum.
